Chapter Eight
Alek hated his insecurities. He was a 700-year-old vampire for Christ’s sake, and there he was feeling hurt and left out again. When Sam had said, “I just found you, I’m not going to lose you,” whilst hugging Jackson, Alek knew, logically, that he probably had meant them both, but Alek’s old fears of being left behind when Jackson finally met his true mate seemingly hadn’t gone away entirely.
He did his best to hide his fears from his lovers. It had taken some time but Alek had learned to shield his emotions from Sam, who was like a walking, talking lie detector for emotions. Anytime either of them got a hint of Alek’s insecurity they went out of their way to make him believe he was loved, which he knew he was. Still, there was always that niggling thought that they would always choose each other over him if it ever came to that.
He loved them both so much. He had loved Jackson from almost the moment he met him, and miraculously, Sam had somehow wormed his way into Alek’s un-beating heart the first night they met. Alek had been predisposed to hate Sam, him being Jackson’s true intended. Instead, the young, shy man had gone out of his way to include Alek and make him feel loved.
Alek had killed for his mates, and he would die for them too. When the Brotherhood came for Sam, Alek would fight to the death to keep him safe, if need be. It was better, if one of them had to fall, that it be him. Sam and Jackson were fated for each other. They would survive loosing Alek, but they wouldn’t survive loosing each other.
“Are we nearly there yet?” Sam whined from the back seat of Alek’s cherry-red Mazda. Alek smiled at his mate in the rearview mirror. They had been driving for an hour as Marley had informed Alek he was now living in London, which luckily wasn’t too far from their home on the coast.
“Nearly.” It had taken a while for him to think of them as his mates. Perhaps as a way of protecting himself, Alek had always called Jackson his lover, or his partner. It had been Sam to first refer to Alek as his mate when he introduced him to his foster mother, Rita.
Alek had called Marley and asked if they could see him tonight. Marley was quite a character, that was for sure. He was a pretty powerful witch, who earned a living utilizing his talents. Alek had made sure to grab a wad of cash from his safe in the bedroom, knowing that Marley didn’t accept plastic.
“So, Alek, how exactly do you know this guy?” Sam asked, his voice tinged with suspicion.
Jackson smirked in the seat beside him and reached behind him to take Sam’s hand. “Don’t worry, darlin’. Alek was with me when we first met Marley. There’s nothing to be jealous about here.”
Alek smiled to himself and felt a sense of warmth go through him.
